hotellimesikammen arkkitehtuuri

The hotel building, which was completed in 1976, was designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, whose best-known work is the Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki, which was mined and built into bedrock.

The architect brothers aimed to match the natural contrast of bedrock and delicate plant life in the area. At Hotel Mesikämmen, visitors step right into nature. Along the main corridor, bedrock and concrete were left bare for guests to see. The robust natural stone surface shows how vibrant stone materials can be. On the outside, the hotel’s wooden structures welcome the fresh air and rest in perfect harmony with the surrounding wilderness. The architects emphasized a bond with nature, free-flowing shapes, and giving everyone a look at the structural solutions, which can be seen all around the hotel.

Hotel Mesikämmen has been featured in several international publications, and it received the Diploma and Silver Hexagon of Habitation Space award in 1978 together with another Finnish design of similar style, AS Oy Majakumpare.
